A good irrigation system keeps a garden looking its best with almost no effort, saves water and protects the investment in your planting. This guide covers how it all works, the right method for each part of a garden, and whether to do it yourself or bring in a professional.
Automatic irrigation is not a luxury for most gardens of any size. It is the difference between planting that thrives and planting you spend every dry evening trying to keep alive.
A well-designed system waters the right amount, in the right place, at the right time, usually in the early morning when evaporation is lowest. It does three things a hosepipe cannot: it is consistent, it is efficient, and it frees you from the job entirely.
It is worth it for almost any planted garden, and close to essential for new planting, large lawns, pots, and any scheme you have spent real money on.
Every system, from a small pot-watering kit to grounds of several acres, is built from the same handful of components. Understanding them makes everything else clearer.

There is no single irrigation method for a whole garden. The skill is matching the type of watering to what is growing, because a lawn, a border and a row of pots all want completely different things.

Spraying a planted border wets the foliage, wastes water to evaporation and encourages disease. Beds want drip, at the roots. Lawns want sprinklers, over the surface. Mixing them up is the most common and most expensive mistake.
The bigger the garden, the more the design matters, because water pressure and flow are finite. This is why systems are split into zones.
Your water supply can only deliver so much flow at once. A single tap cannot run every sprinkler and dripper in a large garden together. So a system is divided into zones, each watering one area, and the controller runs them one after another. Zoning also lets you give each area exactly what it needs: the lawn, the borders, the pots and the greenhouse all get their own schedule.
Good design groups planting into zones by their watering need, sometimes called hydrozones: sunny and shaded areas, thirsty and drought-tolerant planting, drip and sprinkler, all kept on separate zones so nothing is over or under-watered.
Often a single zone: a drip line through the borders and micro drippers to the pots, run off an outside tap through a timer. Very achievable as a DIY kit.
Usually two to four zones: pop-up sprinklers for the lawn on one or two zones, drip for the borders on another, and pots on their own. This is the sweet spot where a professional automated system earns its money.
Many zones, a proper hydraulic design to balance flow and pressure, buried mainlines, and very often a stored water source and pump rather than relying on the mains. This is firmly professional territory, and best designed in alongside the wider landscaping.
Where the water comes from shapes the whole system, and on larger sites it is often the most important decision of all, both for performance and for running cost.
Underground tanks and rainwater harvesting are far cheaper and easier to install during landscaping or a build, while the ground is already open, than to retrofit later.
If there is any chance you will want stored water or rainwater harvesting, put the tank and the ducting in while the groundworks are open. Excavating for a large tank after the garden is finished is expensive and disruptive.
The controller is what turns a set of pipes into an automatic system. This is also where irrigation has improved most in recent years.
A weather-based smart controller with a rain sensor is the single best value addition. It stops the system watering in the rain, cuts your water use noticeably, and keeps the planting healthier by watering only when needed.
Some irrigation is a genuinely satisfying weekend job. Some is firmly for a specialist. Knowing which is which saves both money and frustration.
For pots, small borders and courtyard gardens, above-ground drip and micro systems are very DIY-friendly. Online specialists supply complete, pre-planned kits with everything you need and clear instructions, at a fraction of an installed price. The best-known UK suppliers include Water Irrigation (home of the HydroSure range), Easy Garden Irrigation and Access Irrigation, alongside consumer brands like Hozelock and Gardena. For a modest garden, a self-installed kit and a tap timer can be an excellent, low-cost solution.
The moment the job involves buried pop-up lawn sprinklers, multiple zones, high-pressure mainlines, pumps or storage tanks, it is worth bringing in a specialist. A buried lawn system has to be hydraulically designed so every head gets the right pressure and coverage, trenched in, and commissioned. Done wrong, you get dry patches, wasted water and pipework you have to dig up. A good installer designs it properly, guarantees it, and gets it right first time. Look for a dedicated irrigation contractor or a landscaper registered with the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI).
Many people do both: a professional buried system for the lawn and the mainlines, and simple DIY drip added to the pots and a new border later. There is no rule that says it must be all one or all the other.

DIY wins on small, above-ground drip for pots and borders. A professional wins decisively on buried lawn systems, multiple zones, pumps and tanks, where getting the hydraulics and coverage right first time is worth every penny. Spend the money where the risk of getting it wrong is highest.
