How to make a home cheaper to run, more comfortable and future-ready, without falling for gimmicks.
Energy-efficient does not have to mean compromise. Done well, it means lower bills, a warmer, quieter, healthier home, and one that holds its value as standards tighten. The trick is to do things in the right order, and to fit proven technology rather than the latest fad.
Start with the fabric
Before any clever kit, get the building itself right: insulation to the walls, roof and floor, good airtightness, and quality glazing. A well-insulated, airtight home needs far less energy to heat, and lets smaller, cheaper systems do the job. Money spent here first makes everything else work better. Builders call this "fabric first", and it is the single most important principle.
The technologies worth knowing
- Heat pumps (air-source and ground-source). The main replacement for the gas boiler. An air-source heat pump moves heat from the outside air; a ground-source pump uses buried pipes. They run at lower temperatures, so they work best with underfloor heating or larger radiators, and in a well-insulated home. Efficient and low-carbon when specified correctly.
- Solar PV and battery storage. Roof panels generate electricity and a battery stores it for the evening. Increasingly cost-effective, especially alongside a heat pump and an electric car.
- Solar thermal and PVT. Panels that make hot water, or both electricity and heat at once. Useful in the right home.
- Underfloor heating. Comfortable, even warmth at low flow temperatures, ideal with a heat pump.
- Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR). In an airtight home, MVHR supplies constant fresh air while recovering heat from the stale air it removes. Warmer, healthier, less condensation.
- Smart controls, including Lutron. Zoned heating, lighting and shading that respond to how you actually live, cutting waste and adding comfort.
- EV charging and water saving. A home charger designed in from the start, plus low-flow fittings and rainwater harvesting where they make sense.
- Sustainable materials. Responsibly sourced timber and low-carbon, durable materials that are built to last.
How to approach it
- Fabric first, always. Insulate and seal before you size the systems.
- Design it in early. Retrofitting underfloor heating or MVHR later is expensive; planning it from the start is not.
- Right-size everything. Oversized kit wastes money and undersized kit underperforms. Good design matches the system to the home.
- Think in whole-life terms. The cheapest option to install is rarely the cheapest to run.

Standards are tightening. Building Regulations Part L, EPC ratings and the direction of the Future Homes Standard all push new and improved homes toward low-carbon heating and better fabric.
