Home automation and security.

A properly designed connected home has two layers. First, the devices: the lights, blinds, heating, speakers, cameras, locks and sensors. Second, the control platform that ties them together, so a single command, a keypad button, an app, a voice or an automatic trigger, can act across all of them at once.

That is what turns a house into a home that works for you. A "Goodnight" button that dims the lights, closes the blinds, drops the heating, locks the doors and arms the alarm. A "Leaving" routine that shuts everything down as you drive off. Lights that come on gently at dusk, and a phone alert with a video clip if someone approaches the door while you are away. None of that is possible with disconnected apps; all of it is routine with the right platform.

• Lighting. Dimming, scenes and circadian "warm-dim" control across the whole house, from elegant keypads instead of banks of switches. The single most transformative layer, and the one Lutron leads.
• Blinds and shading. Motorised blinds, curtains and external shading that move on schedule, by sun position, or with a scene, managing light, heat and privacy automatically.
• Heating and climate. Zoned heating, cooling and underfloor control that follows your routine and the weather, saving energy and keeping every room right.
• Audio and video. Multi-room music that follows you around the house, and cinema or media rooms controlled from one remote or app.
• Security and cameras. Alarm, CCTV and sensors integrated in, so the system can react, for example turning on lights when a camera detects someone at night.
• Doors, gates and access. Locks, video entry and gates, all answerable and operable from your phone, anywhere.
• Scenes and routines. The magic layer: single commands and automatic triggers that orchestrate all of the above at once.

Smart and high-security locks

A smart lock lets you enter and grant access by app, code, fob, or fingerprint, and see a log of who came and went. The best combine convenience with genuine security:

• Smart locks. Brands such as Yale and the Nest x Yale range add keypad, app and, increasingly, Apple Home Key and fingerprint entry, while integrating with the wider system.
• High-security cylinders. For the lock itself, a British-standard, anti-snap cylinder such as Ultion resists the most common forced-entry attacks. Convenience should never come at the cost of the mechanical lock underneath.
• Biometric entry. Fingerprint and, in higher-end systems, facial recognition remove keys and codes altogether for trusted users, with a full audit trail.

Video entry, answered from anywhere

A modern IP video door station is the centrepiece of home access. When someone presses the bell, you see and speak to them on your phone, tablet or in-wall screen, whether you are upstairs or abroad, and you can release the door or gate remotely. The leading names, DoorBird, Axis-owned 2N, and Aiphone, integrate with smart locks and the wider platform, so answering the door and letting someone in is one tap from anywhere. This is the "remote online entry" that makes deliveries, guests and tradespeople effortless while you are out.

Gates, driveways and multiple doors

For larger properties, access control extends to automated gates, driveway intercoms and multiple doors, managed with keypads, fobs, cards or mobile credentials, and electric strikes or maglocks on the doors themselves. Every entry point becomes visible, controllable and logged from one place.

• Design it at first fix. Cabling for lighting control, keypads, speakers, cameras, door stations and access is run before plastering. Adding it later means chasing walls and compromise.
• Structured wiring. A central comms cabinet with data cabling to every key location futureproofs the house. Cable is cheap during a build and expensive afterwards.
• Plan the positions. Keypad, screen, camera and speaker locations are decided on the drawings, with the lighting design, not guessed at on site.
• Futureproof generously. Even if you do not fit everything now, running the cabling and leaving provision means you can add it painlessly later.
• Coordinate the trades. Automation, electrics, AV, networking and security all have to work together. That coordination is exactly what a good main contractor manages.
